Internet providers in Portugal: networks, ASNs and addresses

Which networks originate the most IPv4 space in Portugal, which AS numbers MEO, NOS, Vodafone and NOWO use, where they interconnect and how much of the routing is protected by RPKI.

By ipaddress.pt

This guide looks at Portuguese networks through public, verifiable data — the RIPE NCC registry, the global routing table, the RPKI and PeeringDB — rather than market shares or advertising. The figures are from October 2026; Portugal in numbers recomputes them every time we rebuild our datasets.

How much space is registered in Portugal

In our copy of the RIPE NCC delegation file there were about 6.7 million IPv4 addresses in 441 blocks and 167 AS numbers assigned to holders in Portugal. The oldest delegation on record dates from January 1990. Of the 167 AS numbers, 137 announced routes — the rest are reserved, inactive or used only internally.

The networks that originate the most addresses

Ranked by the IPv4 space they originate in the routing table:

Network AS IPv4 announced (approx.)
NOS AS2860 3.3 million
MEO (residential) AS3243 1.9 million
Vodafone Portugal AS12353 1.2 million
RCTS — FCT | FCCN AS1930 360,000
NOWO AS13156 260,000
MEO (mobile) AS42863 255,000

Several providers use more than one AS: MEO also has AS15525 for business customers and AS8657; NOS has AS1897 and separate networks on Madeira and the Azores. DIGI announces blocks geolocated to Portugal from AS20879 (DIGI-PT), which is registered to DIGI Romania — so it does not count among the networks registered in Portugal, a good example of “registered in” and “used in” being different questions.

RCTS is the network of Portugal’s universities, polytechnics and research centres, run by the FCCN unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology. Its block 193.136.0.0/15 and IPv6 prefix 2001:690::/32 are among the oldest and most stable in the country.

IPv6

All the large providers announce IPv6 prefixes — for example 2001:8a0::/32 (MEO), 2001:1588::/29 (NOS) and 2001:818::/29 (Vodafone). But announcing a prefix is not the same as giving IPv6 to every customer: that depends on the contract, the router and the access technology. Of the 137 active Portuguese AS numbers, 58 announced IPv6. The IPv6 test shows whether your connection has it.

RPKI

Of the 1,047 routes originated by Portuguese networks that we checked, 923 (88 %) were RPKI-valid, one was invalid and the rest had no published authorisation. That is high coverage: the main providers have signed ROAs for practically all their blocks. You can check any route with the RPKI validator.

Where the networks meet

Portuguese networks exchange traffic directly at internet exchanges in the Lisbon area: GigaPIX, run by FCT | FCCN, DE-CIX Lisbon, Equinix Lisbon and LIS-IX. The data centres registered in PeeringDB are mostly in and around Lisbon, with a growing cluster in Sines, where international submarine cables land.

What this data does not say

It does not say how many customers each provider has, nor the speed or quality of their service — the official statistics for that are ANACOM’s. It does say, precisely, which networks exist, which addresses they announce and whether those announcements are protected. Look up any network with the ASN lookup.

The protocol that ties networks together: prefixes, AS paths, how traffic finds its way, and why RPKI makes the internet safer.
